豊潤の3部屋 - 英国国立美術館

　ロンドン二日目の打ち合わせは午後3時からだったので、いろいろ思案した挙句、英国国立博物館（The National Gallery）に行く。もちろん何点かの目当てはあったけれど、ちょっとした暇つぶしのつもりだった。けれども、近代絵画のあまりに豊潤な収蔵品に取り憑かれ、結局は年代別に並んだ展示室のうち最後の3部屋で4時間もつかまってしまった。僕は思い立って、一冊のメモ帳――表紙はゴッホ「糸杉のある麦畑」だ――を急いで売店で買って、その3部屋の展示作を余さず書き留めた。個々の感想の前に備忘として書いておこう。

　まず、常設展の展示室は大別して4つの区画に分かれている。1250年から1500年までの絵画、1500年から1600年までの絵画、1600年から1700年までの絵画、そして、1700年から1900年までの絵画、という具合だ。僕は最後の区画の、さらに終わりの3部屋を遡って観た。

　最初に入った、つまり、最後期の作品を展示した展示室46は「ドガと1900年頃の作品(Degas and Art around 1900)」と題されていた。ここで供された作品は以下の通り。

　次の部屋はその名も「ゴッホとセザンヌ(Van Gogh and Cezanne)」。僕の絵画体験は断然に父親の影響で始まっていて、ゴッホとセザンヌはその父が愛する二人の画家だ。初めて訪れる場所だけれど、しかし、展示室に足を踏み入れた時の気分はむしろ帰省に近い。この部屋の展示作品は次の通り。
